“Create New Linked Conversation” Button

Problem

When Smart Merge is enabled in Front, emails sent to multiple shared inboxes (e.g., via BCC) are automatically merged into one conversation. This is useful in most cases but problematic when separate inboxes need to reply independently. Currently, there’s no way to split or duplicate a merged thread while keeping Smart Merge active.

Use Case

Client A sends one email to Inbox A, B, and C (all BCC).

Front merges these into a single conversation.

However, each inbox needs to reply individually (so responses don’t appear in the same thread or reveal other inbox participants).

Proposed Solution

Add a “Create New Linked Conversation” button or action in the conversation options.

This would allow users to generate a new, independent conversation based on the same message content, but linked to the original for reference.

Functionality

  • Available on merged or shared threads.

  • Duplicates the original message into a new conversation within the selected inbox.

  • Maintains a reference link to the source conversation (“Linked from [Conversation ID]”).

  • Keeps Smart Merge globally enabled — no global setting changes required.

  • Could optionally inherit tags, assignee, or custom fields from the source.

Benefits

  • Preserves Smart Merge’s advantages while giving flexibility for separate replies.

  • Avoids confusion and cross-inbox message leakage.

  • Simplifies workflows for teams handling BCC’d or multi-inbox messages.

Optional Extensions

  • Shortcut or rule to auto-split BCC’d conversations into new linked threads per inbox.

  • Analytics showing relationships between linked conversations.
